Can CBD oil help treat the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis?

Listen to the article:

Scientists around the world are increasingly focusing on the effects of CBD oil on several pain-causing conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis. The results of the research are very promising, and we’ll take a look at what they say about the effects of CBD so far;

Research results

The first controlled trial evaluating the use of cannabis-based medicines for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis was conducted in 2006 (link to study). It investigated the cannabis-based drug Sativex. It was administered to study participants for 5 weeks and its use resulted in a significant reduction in pain. Participants also showed improved sleep and most side effects were very mild;

In 2008, a large number of studies (link to comparison), confirming CBD’s ability to reduce pain and improve sleep without negative side effects.

An interesting study was done in 2016 (link to study), here they studied the effects of a CBD gel on rats, the gel helped them reduce joint pain without side effects.

How CBD works

CBD oil has an effect on brain activity, specifically interacting with two receptors called CB1 and CB2 to reduce pain and inflammation. CB2 also plays a role in your immune system. Rheumatoid arthritis involves your immune system attacking the tissue in your joints. This relationship to your immune system could therefore explain why CBD oil seems to work well for its symptoms. In addition, the anti-inflammatory effects of CBD may also help slow or stop the progression of arthritis that causes permanent damage to your joints over time. These effects can also reduce several other inflammation-related symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, such as fatigue and fever.

How to use CBD for rheumatoid arthritis

CBD oil can come in liquid or capsule form. The capsules are consumed in the usual way and the oil can be added to food or drinks. You can also mix CBD oil and your favorite cream and apply it to your skin to help with stiff and painful joints. Some manufacturers already offer therapeutic ointments that contain CBD. Start with a small amount at first and if you don’t notice any side effects, you can increase the amount;

CBD oil has no serious side effects, but if you are taking it for the first time, you may experience mild side effects. If you have been taking rheumatoid arthritis medication for a while, you may experience side effects such as nausea, fatigue, diarrhea, or a change in appetite;

If you are taking any medications for rheumatoid arthritis, consult your doctor first when using CBD products. Take extra care when taking CBD if you have medications that have a warning against consuming grapefruit. This is because CBD has similar properties to some of the ingredients in grapefruit, both of which interact with enzymes that are important for drug metabolism;

A study was performed on mice (reference to a study) that showed a risk of increased liver toxicity with CBD use. However, CBD was used here in very high quantities and in addition in force feeding.

Research to date looking at the benefits of CBD for people with rheumatoid arthritis is very promising. While more research is still needed, in the future CBD may be considered a common means of helping people with this health problem;
