Today is Monday, but it’s not just any Monday – it’s Monday, April 20. Whether or not you’re a cannabis user, you’re sure to know or have heard of the number 420.
So what does it actually mean, or where did the phrase originate?
When did the 420 day originate?
It is speculated that the first connection between the number 420 and marijuana comes from the poet Howard Phillips Lovecraft, who, in his short story “Within the Walls of Eryx” by Kenneth Sterling, describes being intoxicated by the plant and in a state like flying. The state seemed endless to him and he was not focused on the present, after this state began to subside he looked at the clock and found that it was only 4:20 and the whole state lasted only half an hour.
But others think that 420 Day was started by a group of high school kids during the 1970s in California. According to Steven Hager, former news editor of High Times, a group of kids at San Rafael High School used to meet daily at 4:20 a.m. to smoke pot after school. When they saw each other in the hallways during the day, they would call each other “420 Louie,” which means “meet at the Louis Pasteur statue at 4:20 to smoke.”
Whether or not these claims are true, it adds a little history and interest to 420 Day. There are various theories about 420, but no one seems quite sure which one is true. You ever hear of 420 being a police code for possession? Or maybe it’s the penal code for marijuana use? Well, both claims are false. California’s Senate Bill 420, which refers to medical marijuana use, was actually named specifically for the code, not the other way around, which means that even our governments associate the number 420 with marijuana use.
Have you noticed, for example, that there are more patrols around town on this day? Even the police have learned that this day belongs to the grass, but they still have their weird opinions about it, they should probably try it sometime to make the world seem more pleasant to them.
So why is 420 known as “weed day” ?
Another theory states that there are 420 active chemicals in marijuana, a connection between the drug and the number. But according to the Dutch Association for Legal Cannabis, there are more than 500 active ingredients in marijuana and only 70 or so cannabinoids, unique to the plant. But it means that this theory is not compatible with the number 420.
